In a transfer window that was largely dominated by Chelsea’s endless spending, league leaders Arsenal flew under the radar with some very smart deals being signed and a lot of good business being done. Here’s what the Gunners got up to in the January window:
INCOMINGS:
Total Spend: £48m (not including add-ons)
Leandro Trossard: Brighton & Hove Albion à Arsenal (£21m)
After the Belgian fell out with De Zerbi and Brighton, the 28-year-old put pen to paper and made his way to the Emirates. His comparison to Arsenal’s other options on the wing have already been unpacked on this blog (click here). In his two appearances so far, one coming against Manchester United and the other against Manchester City, Trossard has looked like a real threat at left wing and has taken no time to adjust to the Gunners’ attack.
Jakub Kiwior: Spezia à Arsenal (£17m)
Not many people know much about Jakub Kiwior, so I’m here to shed some light. The Polish international stands over 6’2” tall at just 22 years old. Whilst his predominant position is at LCB, Kiwior played 21 out of his 50 games in CDM last season, providing cover for both Gabriel and Thomas Partey.
Jorginho: Chelsea à Arsenal (£10m)
This is the signing that turned the most heads. After having his eye on Jorginho whilst at Manchester City and when he first started at Arsenal, Arteta has finally got his man. The biggest red flag for this deal is of course the player’s age. Whilst Jorginho is 31 years old, Edu and Arteta have structured the deal to be 18 months in length, with the option to extend another year. Pair this short-term deal with the cheap fee paid and this transfer just keeps looking better.
OUTGOINGS:
Total Accumulated: £0m
Albert Sambi Lokonga: Arsenal à Crystal Palace (loan)
There was plenty of hype around Sambi when he first left Anderlecht to come to the Emirates but the Belgian has struggled for minutes since his arrival. A six month loan to a fellow Premier League side looks like a perfect opportunity for the player to flourish and properly develop. Hopefully Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira can mould Lokonga in his image.
Marquinhos: Arsenal à Norwich City (loan)
This is another loan deal that will last until the end of the season. The winger has showed plenty of promise in the Europa League but now Arsenal are looking for Marquinhos to follow in the footsteps of many of their academy graduates in developing and finding form in the Championship. At 19-years-old, Marquinhos can play in a strong Norwich side before looking to break back into Arsenal’s senior team.
Cedric Soares: Arsenal à Fulham (loan)
Similar to the other two loan moves, Cedric moves away from the Emirates until the end of the season in the hope of finding consistent minutes. He is clearly playing third-fiddle to the likes of Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu and therefore has joined Fulham in their quest for European football.
All-in-all, it wasn’t the flashy Mykhalo Mudryk, Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice window that many fans wanted but at the very least it is a very sensible window where Edu made sure that Mikel Arteta had cover in the right areas to continue Arsenal’s title charge.

Didn’t need another reason to hate Jorginho, but good Lord he has given me one
