Was PSV (H) the start of the end for Aaron Ramsdale?

For the first time since 2017, the UEFA Champions League anthem played once again at the Emirates. The Gunners hosted PSV and fielded a strong squad, with minimal changes from the 1-0 win away at Everton. Trossard started in place of an injured Martinelli, Jesus reclaimed his starting spot and Havertz returned to the midfield.

One position that remained unchanged though was the goalkeeper - to many peoples’ surprise.

It was obvious that Arteta would have to make a tough decision about who Arsenal’s Number 1 will be when he signed David Raya. As the saying goes, possession is nine tenths of the law, so it was assumed that Ramsdale would continue on between the sticks until he faltered in form.

So when Raya started against Everton, it was considered (and confirmed by Arteta) that Ramsdale was being rested for the Champions League.

Obviously not.

As Raya started in net, the question was raised – is Ramsdale still Arsenal’s Number 1?

Starting Arsenal’s first four matches, the Englishman showed no drastic drop in form. Nevertheless, Arteta revealed that he felt that a different skillset was needed in certain games where Arsenal would control possession, shifting favour towards David Raya and explaining why he has started in Arsenal's last two games.

One thing is worth considering though – what if Arsenal don’t have a discernible Number 1? Arteta said postgame that Raya started because of the way his skillset combined with the game plan. It’s only logical that Ramsdale will start games that suit his skillset more.

Only time will tell, but it is something that is definitely worth keeping an eye on. With the North London Derby in a matter of days, the decision is as crucial as ever.

You couldn’t possibly lose a NLD at the Emirates, could you.
